Rick Joaquim, SASC Cinematøgrapher

[ BIO ]

Rick Joaquim is an award-winning Cinematographer based in London. Born in South Africa, where he honed his skills working on a diverse range of Narrative, Commercial and Music video projects before moving to the UK. He strongly believes that a cinematographer has to be both the Scientist and the Artist - Utilising the technical skills to bring the heart of the project into the light.

Rick was featured in the prestigious ARRI Camera Showreel in 2019, and his work has since been showcased at leading festivals including Sundance, Cannes, Aesthetica, and the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. He was featured in British Cinematographer Magazine's ‘Meet the New Wave’ - a spotlight series highlighting emerging voices in cinematography.

His cinematography has earned him multiple awards, including ‘Best Cinematography’ at the British Short Film Awards in both 2022 and 2024, as well as ‘Best Achievement in Cinematography in a Documentary at the South African Film & Television Awards 2022 (SAFTA's) to name a few. He was also selected for the American Society of Cinematographers Vision Mentorship Program in 2022 and 2023, where he was mentored by renowned Directors of Photography Jess Hall ASC, BSC and Alice Brooks ASC respectively.

Despite these achievements, Rick remains humble, approachable, and passionate about his craft. He counts himself fortunate to be able to spend time behind the camera collaborating with others and looking for new opportunities to bring unique visions and stories to life through his cinematography.

Fun fact: Before all this, Rick spent most of his life behind a drum kit in loud rock bands... which is probably why he’s so comfortable with chaos and has no problem keeping tempo on fast-moving sets.
